Resources for Learning at Home

On this page you will find resources that will help you with supporting your child's learning. Included are downloadable and online resources for communication, literacy, maths, PDHPE, Science, Creative Arts and History as well as some general resources.

Fernhill School also has a YouTube channel with videos of staff cooking, doing some artwork, reading and more, whilst modelling core words that the students can follow along with on their devices. Why not check it out here. It's lots of fun!

COMMUNICATION RESOURCES

AAC at Home - simple AAC at Home poster for parents who are just getting started - with a focus on Proloquo2Go and PODD.

Reading at Home -Poster describing how you can help your child by reading books with them at home.

Literacy at Home: Shared Reading - Includes information and videos showing how to make the most of reading with your child. A great exlanation and example of the shared reading process we use at school.

Literacy at Home: Predictable Chart Writing - A series of shared writing activities that provide opportunities to develop early literacy skills. Includes information and video showing the process we use at school for the writing with children component of our literacy program.

Teach your monster to read - an award-winning series of games that’s helped millions of children learn to read. Play for free on the website or download the app.

Storyline Online - videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations.

Phonics Hero - engaging games and a cool storyline - step-by-step, building from sounds to single words and then sentences. 7 day free trial for parents

Pevan & Sarah - fun, engaging and educational music, videos and resources for kids, teachers and parents. Seven day free trial (subsribe for $7.99/month). Videos also available on Youtube.

Behind the News (BTN) - news programme broadcast on the ABC aimed at school-aged children to help them understand issues and events outside their own lives.

Scholastic Youtube channel - videos that bring outstanding children's picture books to life.

Tarheel Reader - Lots of easy to read books about favourite kids topics. Can select to have the book read to the student or download as a powerpoint and/or print.

Tarheel Shared Reader - a variant of Tar Heel Reader that emphasizes shared reading.

Numberjacks Youtube channel - animation series featuring ten small superhero numbers living inside an ordinary sofa who, with the help of children, fly out to solve problems in the real world.

Cosmic Kids Yoga - Yoga, mindfulness and relaxation designed specially for kids. Youtube channel with videos or website at www.cosmickids.com 

GoNoodle - a large range of free movement and mindfulness videos

SCIENCE

Cool Australia - Includes a student toolbox with video clips, documentaries, images, articles, stories and news 

Operation Ouch - Youtube channel packed with incredible facts about the human body and fronted by identical twins Dr.Chris and Dr. Xand van Tulleken who experiment and explore their way through the fascinating world of medicine and biology.

Taronga TV - Tune in daily to see your favourite animals, meet the friendly keepers and learn what goes on behind the scenes at Taronga while the zoos are temporarily closed.

Animal House - live stream cameras from Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Australian Reptile Park - a link to the YouTube channel for the Australian Reptile Park where you can watch lots of animal videos. They also have live streams and educational videos daily on their facebook page at 10am and 2pm.

Georgia Aquarium webcam - watch penguins, beluga whales, otters and more in live views from the Georgia Aquarium.

Monterey Bay Aquarium - ten live cams to choose from including penguins, otters, sharks and other sea life.

CREATIVE ARTS/HISTORY

Google Arts & Culture - features content from over 2000 leading museums and archives. Visit top exhibits, zoom in on artworks in mind-blowing detail and browse thousands of stories, photos, videos, and manuscripts. 

Art Gallery NSW - provides information about exhibitions and events at the Gallery. You can search the entirecollection online and access education material, take an online tour or do your own research.

GENERAL

Starfall - reading, phonics & math - educational games, movies, books, songs, and more for children K-3. Some free content.

ABC Splash - thousands of free, curriculum-linked resources for Primary and Secondary students and teachers.

BBC Bitesize - free online study support resource for school-age pupils. Includes learning games.

HelpKidzLearn - a collection of software for young children and those with learning difficulties to play online. Click on the activities tab at the top of the page for free access to games, stories and activities.

Ian Bean - Free online activities for young people with additional needs who are accessing learning and communication through assistive technology including switches, touch-screens, pointing devices and eye gaze. Register for free to download  accessible activities to use on your computer.

Tarheel Gameplay - free to use, can set up favourites. Songs and videos from YouTube that become switch accessible.

Ginger Tiger - Songs, games, etc that are switch accessible - free trial available. 

Virtual Field Trips - Links to over 30 virtual field trips including Mars, The Louvre and the Great Wall of China.

Virtual Museum Tours - virtual tours from 12 famous museums.

National Geographic Kids - Find amazing facts about animals, science, history and geography, along with fun competitions, games and more. 

Scholastic Learn at Home -  day-by-day projects to keep kids reading, thinking, and growing. Including videos, stories and virtual field trips. The website is accessible on any device that has internet, and no sign-up is required. 

OTHER USEFUL RESOURCES

ChooseIt!Maker3 for Parents - instructions for Chooseit!Maker3 including a list of codes which give access to interactive activities made by teachers. These are accessible using a mouse, the spacebar, touchscreen or a switch.
